An Education Blueprint for the Success of Trenton Public School Students

“The moral test of Government is how that Government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped.” – Hubert H. Humphrey, Former Vice President of the United States

The City of Trenton’s greatest resource, its most precious resource, is its children. How we treat our children, how we create an environment in which they can grow, flourish and excel, ultimately becomes not only our moral responsible and challenge but also how we as a society must be graded. If our children fail to achieve, fail to compete, fail to advance and succeed, then we as parents, educators and elected leaders have failed our children.

Historically, candidates for governing bodies of municipalities- Mayors and Council members alike – have made campaign promises to improve the educational system for public school students in their municipalities. However, too often once elected these members of governing bodies have found it convenient to distant themselves from the actions of the local school board. Promises are forgotten and accountability of educational issues too often none exists.

Such has also been the history and tradition in the City of Trenton. Elected municipal officials have taken little if any responsibility for the education of our children. However, they have often been some of the first to criticize administrators and educators for shortcomings, real and imagined. They have been willing to throw stones, point fingers yet they have been nowhere to be found in the building of solid foundations for the education of our youth.

It is recommended that Trenton City Council adopt a city ordinance that reconstitute the membership of the school board to require, that in addition to public members who are appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council, that the Mayor and each member of City Council will also be required to serve as a voting member of the school board.

All issues and decisions effecting the education of our children will be reviewed and acted upon by the Mayor and each member of City Council. If our children fail and our schools receive grades of failure responsibility will sit where it should and that is in the lap of the Mayor and the City Council.
