Better Outreach

Written by Eric Maywar

Trenton is fragmented. There are pools of resources that go untouched, because outreach tends to be limited to the circles of known people. For Trenton to succeed, city wide coordination has to happen.

The civic associations do not cover all of Trenton. The newspapers do not cover all of Trenton. Other pathways of outreach need to be developed.

For example, Classics Used and Rare Books provides free books for Trenton kids. To distribute the books, our outreach led us to partnerships with lots of non-traditional groups

  • Schools—Trenton Central High School, Hedgepeth Williams School, the Garvey School, Columbus School
  • Afterschool programs—OURSEP and Passage Theatre
  • Special events—Children’s Futures for the Puerto Rican Day Parade, the Trenton Police Department for National Night Out, WUCUSU for a back to school event, Powerful Life for a back to school event, SBR Realty for a back to school event, Fatha Ramsee for a back to school event

Finding these non-traditional partnerships allowed Classics to distribute about 2,000 books for the home libraries of Trenton kids in 2009.
